Game and Vista

Read…. Read!
My take on gaming on Vista. Gaming on Vista. Gaming. Vista. Game. Vista.

Reasons To Game On Vista [ Fully benefit gaming on Vista with 'Games For Windows' titles]

1. DirectX 10
Got yourself a shiny new GeForce8/9 GPU ? Then its most likely to be ‘Vista Certified’ meaning true compatibility
and solid performance on Windows Vista. Suggestions for DirectX 10 games – Crysis, BioShock, Company of Heroes. Beware, you will need a high-end rig (nothing less) to play DirectX 10 games in their full glory.

2. Games Explorer
Choose ‘Games For Windows’ titles – these titles assure you full compatibility with Windows Vista. Besides, it will fully support Games Explorer – your one stop for running games on your computer, with WEI score and links to the game website. Some games even have the menu options that take you straight to the configuration options window.

3. Xbox 360 Controller
The Xbox 360 Controller for Windows is the best gamepad you can ever have for a PC. It has the best feel and quality – its really really good. And its fully compatible with Windows Vista. No need for drivers. Most ‘Games For Windows’ titles support this controller.

4. Widescreen Gaming
‘Games For Windows’ titles should (and is a criteria) to support widescreen display resolutions. So if you have a widescreen display (which you certainly will want as Vista gadgets are placed on the right hand side of the screen), rest assured that these games support widescreen resolutions. Crank tat’ resolution !

5. The future of gaming…
Halo 2 for Vista remains the one and only game that supports Tray & Play. Pop the disc into the drive, and you can have the option to ’stream the game and install’ – - it installs the game while you play it ! Just like gaming consoles. Also, cross platform gaming (Shadowrun & Halo 2) is possible – - you can play in multiplayer modes from Windows opponents and Xbox 360 opponents.

6. Parental Controls
If you are a parent, feel free to feel relieved. You can lock/unlock certain games with certain ratings. So, if you’re a good dad, you would lock GTA San Andreas from your kids. If you’re bad, just say the blood in the game is just ketchup and let them play games with senseless violence. You can almost have a time limit to using the computer.. you can try setting a time limit on your ownself – that way, gaming will no longer be addictive.

Err… hail all parents !

Reasons You May Not Want To Game On Vista

1. Old games, compatibility might be in question
Old games (like Rise of the Triad) that use Dos mode may not even install ! You can always try to use compatibility mode but it may not always work. Most old games work though, but some still don’t and won’t. You will have to use DosBox or similar software to play your old games. Some games (circa 2000) that ran on Windows 98 / XP may not work in Vista. Usually its always the case of using compatibility mode, but that may not always work.

2. DirectX 10 / Performance ?
I question the use of DirectX 10 in games… Vista does it job, but there is just a handful of games that support DirectX 10. BioShock with/without DirectX 10 – almost no difference at all. Crysis, there is a ‘tweak’ that allows DirectX 10-like visuals although still using DirectX 9 mode (game creator Cevat Yerli says ‘this isn’t the real DirectX 10 graphics…. ???? ).

Also, not to mention the demanding resources when using DirectX 10 unless you have a high-end gaming rig. Expect games to be ‘a little slower’ in Vista compared to XP.

3. Games For Windows ?
Not all game titles are under the banner of Games For Windows. This raises the question – - why not ? Why won’t game developers just get to this standard. Well, game developers Valve claim they have their own system even though it fully complies with all Games For Windows standards (widescreen resolution, Xbox 360 controller support). The Need For Speed franchise (and other EA titles too) has doged GFW altogether…. for reasons unknown.

As for me….
When Crysis was released, I wanted to shoot my computer. There goes my near 5-digit priced gaming system. It could barely make Crysis run at High. Forget Very High. And (for me), forget DirectX 10. I abandoned PC gaming. Windows Vista was part of the reason too – - DirectX 10 was all the reasons for me to keep gaming on PC, but this was the one thing that just didn’t make me a happy gamer anymore. Its the future of graphics technology, right, but let’s just say I’d prefer gaming consoles. So yes, I am a uber happy Xbox 360 gamer and I use Windows Vista on 4 machines at homes to play MSN games.

That’s right. MSN games. Geometry Wars is my favorite.

Game on!

Choose your destiny of gaming…

How To CleanUP Vista SP1 Junks

Filed under: Software — expertester @ 12:38 pm
Tags:

Either your Vista is preloaded with SP1 or not, you still can clean up several gigabytes of space which is reserve for SP1 uninstallation backup data.

To do this, open the run dialog (Win-R) and type “vsp1cln.exe” (without quotes) and press enter.

This will remove the ability to uninstall the service pack (so make sure to test everything before running the cleanup), and it will cleanup 1GB worth of data off of your hard drive.

Avira AntiVIR vs Norton Antivirus 2009 – Performance

Filed under: Software — expertester @ 12:16 am
Tags: , ,

Most of the users nowadays love to echo what other people said. Sometime, the things they echoed already not valid in current time frame. For example, Karpersky AV might be one of the greatest AV last 2 years, but their current product (even KAV 2009) fails to make this big K, king of Antivirus hill.

So do with Norton. Since 2003, Norton AntiVirus (NAV) was known as resource hungry security product. It will slow down your Windows, slow down your games, file copy and everything. Prior to 2003, Norton was King of The hill but start from 2004 and upward, this product needs to pass its crown to other product. So, most users nowadays will keep saying, Norton AV is a heavy antivirus, resource hogger and slow. But for those who read my entry early this year, I wrote that NAV2008 was no longer a heavy and resource hogger as they used to be. But still, to beat Nod32 and Avira AntiVIR in term of performance (how bad it will slowdown boot time, slow your running application etc), it was quite an impossible job for NAV 2008.

So my aim today is to compare between Avira AntiVIR SE (Free, but use the very same scan engine as paid version except POP3 scanner, webshield and spyware remover) and Norton AntiVirus 2009 (3 month trial period, you may get it at the bottom of this review : AV scanner, IM, web protect, email pop3 protect etc).

Why do I choose Avira Antivir to be compared with NAV2009? Because Avira AntiVir is my favorite antivirus this year, top scorer in av-comparative.org, light on resource and free. I tested KAV2009 and uninstall it after a week. Too heavy for my liking. I tested RisingAV for 2 months and ditched it when I found my computer infected by a dozen of viruses. (Lucky for me to have a full backup image and at the end of the day, I still use Avira. However, NAV2009 start to make its noise in several computer tech. forum especially on how light it is (compare to previous version of nav and competitor product) and computer resource friendly. I can’t insist the temptation to test it and make a small benchmark between my trusted Avira SE and NAV 2009.

So, what I will do are :

  • Boot time measurement: I will measure how long my computer boot, start from the boot loader, until vista show its desktop. Repeat 3 times for both Avira and NAV.
  • Measure memory consumption after 12 minutes Vista successfully boot up. The idea is I want to let the OS settle down after the booting process. I decide to let it idle (after boot) for 12 minutes, and take a “task manager -> Performance” screenshot.
  • Performance Test using Passmark 6.1 which I run 3 times for each contender.
  • As reference, I will measure boot time, idle memory consumption and performance test 6.1 marks when there is no antivirus install in my system. This will give a clear indication how much antivirus does affect my overall PC performance.

Boot Time (in second, less is better) : Avira AV seem doesn’t toll my system too much during boot time. Averagely around 1 second which is very good. I used to think Avira Antivir slowdown my boot time a lot and these numbers amaze me. NAV 2009 also proves that it only slow down my boot time for averagely 1 second. I don’t expect NAV to perform this good honestly. Due to so many variable involve, I dare to say, NAV09 and Avira Antivir SE perform roughly neck to neck (in term of boot time measurement).

12 Minutes idle total memory usage (less is better) : During 12 minutes idle, I saw several times fluctuation between 607 MB and 609 MB on system with NAV installed. I guess Norton AV 2009 Pulse Update do its work and consume 2 MB more for that short period of purpose. I dare to say, in complete idle situation, system with NAV09 use approximately 607 MB, 2 MB more than Avira AntiVir. Not bad actually provided it protect my IM, web safe, POP3 outlook, anti-spyware where Avira AntiVIR free edition lack of those features. Kinda trade-off.

Performance Test Mark :

NAV2009 beat Avira for first and second attempt of the benchmark. However, Avira able to outperform Norton AV 2009 in third attempt. Norton might has its edge here but the different is not significant.

Verdict :

Norton AntiVirus 2009 is one of the lightest and complete antivirus solutions to date. In term of PC performance penalty, it performs as well as Avira AntiVir SE if not better. However, it offer more features than Avira Antivir free (Premium edition has all those bell and whistle too). Impulse Update is a good idea as it keeps update virus definition and white-list very frequently (4 minute interval?). Norton Insight, according to Norton community blog, could reduce scanning speed tremendously. However, NAV2009 is not cheap. Price range (internationally) from USD 20 to USD 30. In Malaysia, NAV 2009 will cost you approximately RM130. So, if money is an object, I rather settle with Avira Antivir SE.

I dearly hope this mini review will clear some of common misunderstanding regarding Norton Anti Virus. Yes, NAV was a resource hogger before, but Norton Dev Team finally able improves their product exponentially. NAV2008 show a very good indication toward system resource friendly principal and NAV09 make a quantum leap for Norton AV product. If NAV2009 is not the lightest AV in the market currently, it is ONE of the LIGHTEST (and protects your PC well) anti virus money could buy today.

Effectiveness :

I can’t review how effective they are but I put my trust base on av-comperative.org (an independent lab, that put their effort in testing various kind of AV in the market). According to them (http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/ergebnisse_2008_08.php), Avira score 99.6% while Symantec Norton 99.0%. (Kaspersky only manage to get 97.6%, ouch. Even Avast Pro beat big K). I honestly don’t very sure either Norton here (I mean from the link above) is NAV08 or NAV09. But I assume if NAV08 score this well, NAV09 should perform better due to Norton Insight feature. One thing worth to note is, NAV has few false positive but Avira, according to av-comperative has many. False positive is a situation where antivirus report legit and normal files as virus. Once they quarantine or delete this file, what will happen to your computer is unthinkable. A scanner with high false positive might lead to higher detection rate but it is kind of cheating for antivirus developer. Ideally, an antivirus should has 100% detection rate with ZERO false positive. So, practically, we as the users are looking for highest detection rate with very few false positive.

Bye bye Izzi, Welcome Back Streamyx

Filed under: Internet — expertester @ 11:57 am
Tags: , , ,

Oh yeah, finally my Izzi subscription ended. What a relief. Today will be the last day I use izzi as my broadband service provider. I already can’t ‘tahan’ (bear) anymore the service quality. Most of the time I only get 80 kbps..yes…you read it right. It is kbps, not capital letter B. Which mean, my download speed is somewhere around 8-10 kBps. What a phatetic service, and still need to pay RM98 (RM88 for renewal subscription, monthly basis).

I stay at Kelana Jaya and according to Izzi guy, KJ is the most saturated izzi user. Even so, this should be not their reason to provide 8% of their advertise speed. Would you not be mad, if you pay RM98 for 1000 kbps broadband but they only provie you 80 kbps? That is 24kbps faster than dial up speed. No wonder my browsing (I already say bye bye to torrent and download, unless I have too) experience become so terrible. It need more than 20 seconds to open www.tomshardware.page. So do with other website which utilize heavy graphics and flash…

So, last week I do myself a favour. I went to TM Point Kelana Jaya and register myself TM.net Streamyx Combo 60. Pay RM75 for phone line activation fee and RM30 to the tm contractor (he came to my resident area and config. phone line jumper). Total up, RM105. I am pleasantly surprise because I used to think that I need to fork out around RM300-RM400 upfront, for the phone line, deposits etc etc. But, what I do actually need just RM105, LoL. And, if I already have a phoneline activated, I should pay nothing to register streamyx (I mean upfront). And I expect my first bill will consist of 2xRM60 (this month and deposit of my combo60). Activation (streamyx) already waived…yay.

But, why i subscribe Combo60 (384 kbps) instead of Combo90 (512kbps) or Combo110 (1Mbps) ? 2 reasons actually.

First, I don’t know that my appartment copper line is in good or bad condition. Streamyx use ADSL technology which is base on best effort basis. If I subscribe 1 Mbps service and the copper line is relatively bad for high freq. signal, my stremyx line will be throtled down upon handshaking between my modem and ISP. If my modem insist and agree for 1 mbps connection, but the copper line can’t hold it, frequent disconnection will occur. Frequent DC is what I hate most. So, I start with slow line speed, observe the average downstream and upstream speed, and if I confident that this line could support higher speed, I will upgrade (upgrade can be done fromt their website and FOC). However, if I start at 1mbps and this copper line could only support up to 600 kbps, I will doomed as tm.net doesn’t entertain any downgrade request. Simply said, during the contract period (1 year), you can upgrade your streamyx speed but you can’t downgrade due what so ever reason.

Second, Streamyx is known for their fair usage policy or in other word, P2P packet throtling. Theoritically, my combo60 will allow me to download at 48 kBps (I test at nzones.com, download speed (FTP) at 49 kBps, sweet), but if they throtled my torrent and cap it at 10 kBps, I don’t see any reason for me to get 1 Mbps service. 384kbps is more than enough for email, browsing and casual downlaod activity.

And 59 kBps is way faster than 10 kBps (this is what Izzi provide me, most of the time, except during 2AM to 6 AM, but I am sleeping at that time duh..).

I am fully aware that streamyx has its own problems and headache too. Well, if anyone could tell me that there is 1 ISP in Malaysia that able to provide headacheless service, I will jump from KLCC :D . I rather bear streamyx problem (but consistent 45-50 kBps downstream speed) rather than virtually no problem for izzi but downstream speed averagely 8-10 kBps. (Imagine, when I use Izzi, once i format my PC, i need to let my pc perform windows update from 12 midnight till 7 AM in the morning).

So, how fast my stremyx combo60 actually?

Here we go. 479 kbps for 384kbps service. For RM60, I got this speed + a working phone line where I can use it to call any number in Malaysia (different charge) but assuming I running out of mobile phone credit, I could use this one for emergency. However, upload speed is lower than what they advertise.

let see how fast this line when we use Singpore test server.

Sweet, still more than 384kbps.

So, let recap how much Izzi could provide me.

Well, picture speed thousands of word…as I am already speechless looking at 80 kbps from 1Mbps izzi subscription.

Final word : If you want to subscribe to izzi broadband, ask the reseller to perform a speedtest first at your home. Try to test the connection speed at your desired working area, as wireless signal may detrotriate and affect your wireless broadband speed. If you have phone line and willing to wait 7-10 days, simply go for streamyx. For RM60, I got lifetime warranty modem and faster line speed (practically) compare to izzi, 1 year warranty and slower practical broadband speed for RM98.

ATI Radeon 4850 Best Performance per Buck

Filed under: Hardware — expertester @ 2:19 am

Last year, around November 2007, I decide to do major upgrade for my ancient PC which use Athlon XP 2500+, 512 MB Rams and ATI Radeon 9600XT. I bought Core 2 Duo, 2 GB Rams and GeForce 8600GTS. However, I merely dissapoint when my new PC (at that moment) can’t play latest game at highest setting @ 1440×900 resoultion. Even Need For Speed Prostreet can’t be maxed out. I was about…wtf. RM700 for GeForce 8600 GTS still not enough to run 2007 games at maximum setting..duh.

I stilll remember, when I bought ATI Radeon 9600XT (RM700 too), I can play all games (at that time) at maximum setting. I used to think that middle end 3D card will do fine for current games but they are not future proof, but 8600 GTS make me felt wasted.

gigabyte-4850-zalmanATI Radeon 4850 with Zalan Fan (Copper + Aluminium HS)

Last month, I decide to buy ATI Radeon 4850 (Gigabyte with Zalman HSF) @ RM 575.00 only. A solid RM125.00 cheaper than my normal budget for 3D card. However, this card seriously make me smile all day long (even now actually). I can play any games (Crysis, FarCry2, Undercover, Grid etc etc….simply said…all games that I can throw to it) with maximum setting at 1440×900 resoultion. No problem at all. I still amaze how good this sub RM600 card could do and now I really appreciate DX10 and Games for Windows logo.

So, if you have RM500-600 to be spend on graphics card, look no more. ATI Radeon 4850 could be your best bet. I could say, it pawn GeForce 9800 GTX with ease. However, GeForce 9800 GTX+ could beat 4850 at certain games but GTX+ price already above RM750 for most brand.

I notice that, ATI Radeon perform very well in games which heavily utilize pixel shader (water effect for exampel) but GeForce card perform really good in heavy texture games. For example, most benchmark show 4850 could beat 9800 GTX+ in Crysis but 9800 GTX+ beat 4850 in Unreal Tournament 3.

Even though, with my old C2D processor and rather slow DDR2800 RAMs, I still able to play UT3 at maximum setting and maximum resolution for my 19 inch LCD monitor with ease.

Note : Some forumers complain that their 4850 could become really hot, touching 70 degree celcius. However, my Gigabyte Radeon 4850 with Zalman Fan, idle temperature normally 52 degree and barely touch 60 degree (heavy load).

I kinda love the supplied Gamers HUD which allow me to turbo boost (it actually 10% frequency overclock) with a touch of button. Under light load, it will automatically trigger 2D mode which will lower GPU running freq, thus consume less energy resulting less heat. Pretty nice for average consumer. (ATI also provide OverDrive function in their driver to manually overclock this card).

Drawback : Zalman fan a little bit noisy for certain people. With my previous 8600GTS, I can’t hear any fan noise when my PC turn on. In fact, I need to check PowerON LED to ensure my PC is switch ON of OFF. But now, with 4850 with Zalman Fan inside my LianLi Alu casing, I could hear its noise and need no more to stare that red powerON LED :D

Final Word : I am not willing to do and publish a number of benchmark result as you could fine those result in trizillion of pages on Google. However, as my personal experience, I seriously satisfy with my purchase on this card. I have hard time to choose either 4670, 9600GT, 4830, 9800GTX, 4850 or 9800GTX+. I did a lot of homework for this purchase (as I don’t have tonne of cash to spend for a 3d card anually) and I found it worth every single cent. 4670 will cost around RM350 but the performance is somewhere 60% of 4850. Even 9600GT could pawn it. 4830 price is somewhere RM100 cheaper than 4850 but the performance penalty is more than that. 9800GTX+ at certain gain beat 4850 roughly at 10% but, the price different doesn’t justify…so in the end, I bought 4850.

How to fix NFS Undercover Performance Choppy Framerate

Filed under: Software — expertester @ 1:35 am

It kinda funny when people start complaining and arguing that they have state of the art computer which could run Crysis at maximum setting and GRID at ultra setting but suffer performance choppiness when they played Need For Speed Undercover.

Among the complains are :

  • Bad framerate even at low resolution and mediacore graphics setting
  • Poor world rendering quality
  • Jagged shadow (anti-aliasing not work)
  • Poor overall graphics quality even every settings are max out
  • etc etc

Undercover actually use Prostreet 3D engine which undergone major tweaks here and there to produce stunning graphics quality. To be honest, I pretty impress with overall NFS Undercover graphics quality, fluidity and gameplay.  I am using Core 2 Duo (2 cores) and ATI Radeon 4850 and 2 GB of RAMs (Vista). But, why most of the forumers keep complaining that their NFS Undercover really sux big time?

I discover this one when my younger brother ask me the same question. Our computer basically has same performance (his computer use C2D, 2 GB of RAMs and GeForce 9800 GTX) but he seriously suffer bad framerate and graphics quality. The only difference between us is, I use original NFS Undercover while he use pirated one. It doesn’t make sense at first but it actually do.

The real culprit is paul.dll crack files. When I replace this crack paul.dll over my original paul.dll, immediately my NFS Undercover become seriously hideos game. Overwrite back the cracked paul.dll with original paul.dll, everything return to normal.

So, in order to help my brother (but I can’t afford to send him my original copy of NFS (I am NFS Collector, so I don’t mind to pay RM90.00 for this game) due to geographical distance), I did try to find alternative solution and fortunately found one.

I do not promote any kind of piracy. But, I assume that anyone who bought the original games deserve to make a backup copy for their own personal use (I did). I am not willing to abuse my original collector game disc by any means. So, for this reason, here is the proper fix for your backup copy (or ahem ahem copy) of NFS Undercover.

Please note that you need to replace your cracked paul.dll with original paul.dll either you reinstall your NFS Undercover your you use mine (as per attach in that 7zip file).

Download NFS Undercover Performance Fixer here.

Alahai…. Telekom Malaysia aka TM.

Tapi sampai sekarang, line telefon tak activate lagi (Sabtu, dah 6 hari dah). Giler ke apa… Apa la yang lama sangat nak activatekan line telefon aku tuh. Pasang dah.

Syarikat 6228. Time pasang, nak amik RM30 mmg la baik, kata “Abang, kalau ada apa-apa masalah, call nombor nie k.

Kalau dah macam nie work culture tm, pakai 2 minggu la aku kena tunggu utk dapat streamyx aku. Gila babi betul. Kalau macam nie yang jadi, gomen pun wat kejer lagi laju. Gomen nyer staff pun sekarang dah friendly dan professional dah. Tapi, bila aku berurusan dengan compony corporate macam nie, tak expect la service diorang, Ya Rabbi, amat mengecewakan. Seriously, aku amat kecewa dengan prestasi kerja TM.

Aku dah complain kat TM 3 kali, tapi x ada apa apa tindakan yang diambil. Adoi. Semua nie mula pada hari Selasa iaitu sehari selepas aku register. Sorang awek claim, call dari TM kata nak hantar technician pasang line telefon kat rumah aku hari Selasa, iaitu esoknya. Aku pun minta la excuse dari manager aku utk amik time-off sebab tak dek saper kat rumah. Tapi hampeh, cakap jer lebih. Tunggu punya tunggu, saper pun tak datang. Bengang la. Call cakap hari rabu nak datang, bila kita dah tunggu, tak datang plak. Habiskan time-off aku jer. Then, aku call TM la…apa dah jadi nie. Cakap hari rabu nak hantar orang. Sorang awek tu pun cakap la…:”Owh..kami akan semak dengan bahagian pemasangan yer…Diorang akan call En. XXXX nanti”. Hati dah panas dah. Tapi sabar lagi. Pukul 12 thari, ada la sorang technician call, En. Rashid. Kata nak pasang dalam pukul 1. Aku pun rush balik time lunch utk tunggu dia. Pukul 1.50 pm baru pasang. Pukul 2 aku rush balik masuk kejer. Giler tul. … Semua nie aku buat dengan harapan, by the moment Izzi aku habis (hari ahad), aku leh pakai Streamyx. Tapi haram…. haram yang sebenar-benar haram. Hari ahad nie, line telefon aku pun tak diaktifkan lagi. Bangsat betul.

Alahai…stremyx tak masuk pun lagi…tapi sakit hati, kepala dan jiwa dah aku lalui. TM….. ko memang slow. Slow pada standard hari nie. Kalau 20 tahun dulu ko perlukan seminggu untuk aktifkan satu line telefon, aku terima lagi..tapi tahun 2008 cam nie… tak masuk akal langsung ko perlukan labih dari seminggu utk aktifkan satu line telefon. Apa masalahnya??!! Complain dah diaju secara berhemah..takkan la awek yang aku call kat TM Call Center tu sekadar jawab telefon dan tutup kes kat situ jugak.

Aku dah tak kira dah. Hari Isnin nie, bergegar la TMPoint Kelana Jaya. Nak cakap apa cakapla…yang nyata aku mmg tak puas hati dengan TM dan contractor-contractor nya. Sampai hari nie, aku call contractor yang pasang phone aku tu, tak pernah diangkatnya telefon… bingai tul.

Aghh… TM Sucks. Sucks big TIME. Government should split TM into half and let they compete. Asalnya TM nie pun datang dari duit cukai rakyat per. Telekom Malaysia pada asalnya adalah milik kerajaan yang diswastakan. Tapi bila dah swasta camnie, habis habisan dia exploit kuasa monopoli dia.

Woi TM… cepat la process aku punya line telofon dan streamyx…. GRRR
